During a trip to Japan, Timea and her friends made accessories in Okinawa, encasing star sand in glass.
Glass necklaces, hair bands, earrings, key rings and even chopstick rests,
Think about what you want to make.
Choose three to five colours from ten different glass powders and think about the design you want to make.
You can also try drawing a rough sketch of your design.
“Can you make a detailed design? For example, names or ……?”
For example, a colour gradient, a cat silhouette, one initial,
Simple designs can be beautifully done.
Once the design has been decided, it is drawn directly on the glass plate with a magic marker.
Then, place the glass powder of your choice on top.
Leave some space between the colours, being careful not to mix the colours.
Be aware that all glass colours are made from minerals, so if they are incompatible, the colours will smudge and the piece will crack.
Finally, select three star sands and place them on the glass work.
Star sand is a sea-drifting creature.
They are foraminifera and live in a shell like a snail.
When they die, their shells are washed up in the surf and are called ‘star sand’ because their radial spines look like stars.
The chopstick rest piece was completed by placing a glass part on the topmost glass to prevent the chopsticks from rolling off.
It turned out very nice!
